Freshman Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team set a new school record at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday, March 18 in Greensboro, N.C. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Riek's record-breaking performance came in the 200-yard butterfly.
The Tartans have had success in the 200-yard butterfly at the national championships with 12 All-America performances and Riek added to it with a third-place showing in one of the closest finishes of the meet. Riek's finals time of 1:47.68 topped his preliminaries time of 1:48.27 and was three tenths of a second off the championship time Friday night.
Riek's time topped the previous school record of 1:49.54 set in 2007 by David Krzeminski when he won the eighth national championship in program history as a senior.
The freshman's meet isn't finished yet as he'll compete in the 1,650-yard freestyle on Saturday. His top time entering the meet is tied for 14th at 15:48.97.
