Tartans Top Clarion in First Home Meet

The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team hosted Division II Clarion University on Saturday, November 5 and defeated the Golden Eagles, 185-85.

The 200-yard medley-relay of senior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), junior Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), freshman Ryan Fitzpatrick (Montgomery, N.J./Montgomery), and freshman Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) touched first in a season-best time of 1:35.25.

Freshman Mark Gorelik (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) led a sweep of the 1,000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 10:05.91 with freshman Jacob Buckheit (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples) touching second in a season-best time of 10:06.04.

The 200-yard freestyle was won by freshman Daniel Li (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) in 1:44.31 as freshman Eugene Luo (Tampa, Fla./King) out-touched his teammate Ben Baxter (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) in the 100-yard backstroke by less than a second in a time of 54.61. Li later led a sweep of the 500-yard freestyle when he touched first in 4:43.42.

Chu won the 100-yard breaststroke by touching the wall in 57.20 with his brother Winston finishing second in 58.09 before he won the 200-yard breaststroke in a season-best 2:10.50. Mehta led a sweep of the 50-yard freestyle, touching first in 21.99 with Hawke touching second in 22.14. Hawke later won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.94.

Sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly when he touched in 1:51.65 and later won the 100-yard freestyle in 47.54.

Sophomore Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) won the 1-meter diving event with 283.05 points and met the regional qualifying standard for the second time in as many meets this season. He also won the 3-meter diving event with a career-best 273.67 points for six dives.
