Tartans Win Three Events at Meet With Denison

The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team went on the road to Denison University to compete against the Big Red on Saturday, January 21. Denison won the dual meet by a 159-130 score.

Sophomore Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) won two events for the Tartans. He won the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.02 seconds and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:08.24. It's the third time he's won each event this year and second time he's won them both in the same meet. Senior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) touched third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.92 seconds and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.82.

Freshman Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) picked up a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle when he touched first in 4:37.53, four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Freshman Jack Hoagland (Colts Neck, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was second in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:56.21.

Freshman Daniel Li (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) finished the 1,000-yard freestyle in third place with a time of 9:55.47 while sophomore Michael DiBacco(Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) was third in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.83.

Freshman Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) was third in the 200-yard IM in 1:59.23 before the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jay, freshman Richard Deng(West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South), freshman Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy), and freshman Ryan Fitzpatrick (Montgomery, N.J./Montgomery) finished second in 1:25.26.

Sophomore Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) tallied 476.40 points on the 3-meter board to place third. He was also third on the 1-meter board with 475.88 points. Both scores are career bests for six dives.
