Mitchell Riek Leads Tartans to Two Wins in Home Double Dual

The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team hosted Grove City College and Washington and Lee University on Saturday, November 12 for a double-dual meet. The Tartans won 12 events and topped the Wolverines, 208-83, and the Generals, 191-71.

Sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) swam three new individual events for the season and won all three for the afternoon starting with the 1,000-yard freestyle which he finished in a career-best 9:39.96. Riek also won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.19 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.80. He was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay that touched first in team season-best 1:26.43.

Freshman Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) earned his second victory of the season in the 200-yard freestyle and first in the 100-yard freestyle with winning times of 1:44.74 and 47.53, respectively.

Brothers Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) and Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) continue to challenge each other in the 100-yard breaststroke as they took the first two spots for the third time this season. In today's meet, younger brother Winston earned the victory by two tenths of a second with a time of 57.57. It was his second victory in the event this season. Later in the meet, Winston won the 200-yard breaststroke for the third time this season, touching in a season-best 2:10.15.

Freshman Richard Deng (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South) and senior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) each won an event for the second time in as many attempts this season. Deng led a sweep of the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:57.94 while Mehta touched first in the 100-yard butterfly in a season-best 51.94.

The final individual event of the day was won by freshman Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast), as he finished the 200-yard IM in a season-best 1:56.95 to lead another Tartan sweep.

The Tartans also won the 200-yard medley relay in a team season-best time of 1:34.83 behind  performances from Deng, Matthew Chu, Mehta and senior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga).

Diving wasn't factored into the team scores however, sophomore Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) crushed his season-best score for six dives on the 3-meter board with a point tally of 340.43
