Four Event Titles Highlight Day Three at UAA Championships for Emory Men's Swimming & Diving

The Emory University Men's Swimming and Diving team maintained their substantial lead on the rest of the University Athletic Association field heading into the final day of competition at the UAA Championships thanks to four event titles on Friday night at the Ratner Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Chicago.

Spanning two days of swimming action, the Eagles have taken home a total of nine UAA event championships and head into Saturday with a 155 point lead, scoring 1,153.5 total points. Washington is in second at 998.5 points with New York University (833), Chicago (772.5), Carnegie Mellon (674.5), Case Western Reserve (524), Rochester (306) and Brandeis (218) rounding out the team standings.

Freshman Trevor Burke began the finals session on Friday earning his second All-UAA honor of the meet. Burke placed second in the 3-meter, 11-dives event with a school record score of 512.25, topping Chris Radpour's 27-year old mark of 508.20.

The 200 Medley Relay consisting of freshman Sage Ono, senior Andrew Wilson and juniors Cooper Tollen and Oliver Smith opened the swimming portion of the evening by earning the top spot in the finals. The group touched at 1:27.57, breaking the previous UAA record by more than two seconds (1:29.70).

Later, Wilson claimed his second individual title of the meet, winning the 100 Breaststroke in a time of 52.70. His finals' time as well as his preliminary mark (53.26) represented new UAA records, breaking his prior UAA record of 54.12. The win marked Wilson's third career Association title in the event.

Ono followed by winning his first career UAA individual crown in the 100 Backstroke. Ono posted a blazing 48.08 in the finals, defeating the rest of the field by close to 1.5 seconds. His time in the finals as well his morning session mark of 49.21 bested the previous UAA record held by current Eagles' assistant coach Ross Spock (49.38).

Emory wrapped up the night with its fourth event win, touching first in the 800 Freestyle Relay. The group of sophomores Thomas Gordon, Alex Kohlmanand seniors Christian Baker and Hayes Burdette-Sapp registered a time of 6:43.84 to win the event.

Other notable finishes turned in on Friday were senior Mitchell Cooper in the 400 IM (5th, 3:59.47 in prelims), Baker in the 200 Freestyle (7th, 1:40.96), sophomore Matt Rogers in the 100 Back (51.00), Tollen in the 100 Breast (8th, 55.68 in prelims), sophomore Zachary Chen in the 400 IM (9th, 4:02.86) and Smith in the 100 Fly (14th, 51.12 in prelims).

The Eagles will look to win their 19th straight UAA title as the UAA Championships conclude on Saturday. Events on the final day include the women's 1-meter diving, 200 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly, 1,650 Freestyle and the 400 Freestyle Relay.
