Emory Men's Swimming & Diving Climbs Into First at UAA Championships After Thursday Sweep

The Emory University Men's Swimming and Diving team turned in a tremendous showing on Thursday night on day two of the University Athletic Association Championships, winning all five swimming events to open up a commanding lead on the rest of the field.

Through two days of competition, the Eagles have staked claim to a 161-point lead, totaling 596 total points. Trailing Emory in the team standings is Washington University (435), New York University (339), Chicago (325.5), Carnegie Mellon (268.5), Case Western Reserve (258), Brandeis (142) and Rochester (139).

The Eagles began the finals session on an impressive note, setting the UAA record in the 200 Freestyle Relay, the first of four Association records set by the Emory men on the evening. The foursome of juniors Alexander Hardwick, Aaron Schwartz, Oliver Smith and sophomore Trey Kolleck touched first at 1:20.75, besting second place UC by over second and a half (1:22.39).

Sophomore Thomas Gordon picked up the Eagles' second UAA title on the night, taking home the top spot in the 500 Freestyle. Gordon swam a blistering final 50 Free (24.82 – his fastest split) to finish with a time of 4:28.16, overcoming NYU's Ian Rainey (4:28.54) for first place. Senior Christian Baker added All-UAA honors in the event, placing third in a time of 4:30.81.

Senior Andrew Wilson won Emory's third UAA event championship on Thursday, as he was victorious in the 200 IM with a UAA record mark of 1:46.69. The win marked Wilson's second career UAA title in the 200 IM.

In the 50 Free, junior Oliver Smith claimed his first ever UAA title, winning the event in a UAA record time of 20.04.

Baker, Wilson, Smith and freshman Sage Ono closed out day two of the meet with the Eagles' fifth event championship as the quartet earned the 400 Medley Relay crown with a time of 3:15.60, Emory's fourth Association record of the night.

The UAA Swimming and Diving Championships continues on Friday with preliminaries in the morning at 11:00 AM EST with the finals at 6:30 PM EST. Day three events include men's 3-Meter Diving, 200 Medley Relay, 400 Individual Medley, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, and the 800 Freestyle Relay.
