Case Western Reserve University swimmer and recent graduate Andrew Henning (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) was chosen as a recipient of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship based on his athletic and academic achievements, along with his work in the community and demonstrated leadership.  One of 58 winter sport athletes selected for the scholarship from across all three NCAA divisions, Henning will receive a one-time, nonrenewable grant of $7,500 to be used for graduate study.

Henning is the second Spartan this year to win the scholarship, along with men's soccer player Zach Broujos in the fall, and the 26th student-athlete overall in CWRU history.  He is also just the second member of the men's swimming and diving team to claim the scholarship, joining Guy Genin, who was selected as a scholarship winner in 1990.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically, and are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.  The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.  This season's NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients (29 men and 29 women) represent members of winter sports teams, including basketball, fencing, gymnastics, ice hockey, indoor track and field, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, and wrestling.

Henning has been a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that has qualified for the NCAA Championships each of the past two seasons.  In 2016, his 800-yard freestyle relay team placed 10th at the NCAA Championships with a school-record mark of 6:42.43, earning an All-America Honorable Mention in the event.  The relay team also finished first at the 2016 UAA Championships, becoming the first CWRU squad ever to win a relay event at the UAA Championships.  This season, serving as a team captain, Henning and the 800-yard freestyle relay team qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing second in the event at the UAA Championships with a time of 6:45.24.  A freestyle specialist, he has recorded career-best times of 22.48 in the 50-yard freestyle, 46.59 in the 100-yard freestyle, 1:41.58 in the 200-yard freestyle and 4:37.97 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Henning, an Accounting major with a 3.97 cumulative grade point average, earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Second Team earlier this year, and was named to the UAA President's Scholar-Athlete Team in 2016.  He has claimed UAA All-Academic honors each of his three eligible seasons, and was selected as a CSCAA Academic All-American in 2016, while earning an honorable mention for the award in 2014.

In addition to his work in the classroom and in the pool, Henning has worked with the Case Association of Student Athletes and BlueCWRU, while also volunteering as a swim coach and with the Relay for Life.  He was the student-athlete representative on the CWRU Department of Physical Education and Athletics committee to rewrite its mission statement last year, and worked with Feeding South Florida during the swimming and diving team's training trip to Florida.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
