Brandon Lum of Washington University Sets NCAA DIII 200 Fly Record to Win National Title

Sophomore Brandon Lum set a new NCAA Division III record in route to winning the 200 butterfly National Championship during day three of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving National Championships in Shenandoah, Texas Friday evening.

Lum broke the WashU school record during prelims (1:46.33) before shedding nearly two seconds off to win the National Title with a time of 1:44.56. The Bears previous record holder was Reed Dalton, who set the record in 2015 (1:48.07). Lum earned his first All-American honor of his career one season after an honorable mention All-American finish in nationals in the 200 FL.

Senior Michael Lagieski also earned All-American honors, his fourth of the week and 13th of his career. He swam a season-best 53.86 in the 100 breaststroke to finish with a runner-up status in the finals after placing fourth in the morning's prelims.

The WashU women were led by a third place finish in the 800 freestyle relay by junior Nicole Zanolli, junior Niamh O'Grady, senior MariMac Collins and sophomore Lauren Sapp. The group swam to a season-best time of 7:21.92. O'Grady earned four points for the WashU women with a 13th place finish in the 200 FL (2:03.60).

Freshman Peyton Wilson swam to a new school record during the 100 backstroke prelims (49.08) before finishing 11th in the finals with a time of 49.35. He previously set the school record at the University Athletic Association Championships. He earned All-American honorable mention while sophomore Kevin Van Cleave finished 29th in the prelims with a time of 50.63.

Van Cleave, senior Andrew Ellison, freshman Chase Van Patten and senior Justin Morrell swam to an 11th place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. The group swam to a WashU season-best time of 6:41.36.

Senior Emily Ramos also competed for the Bears during the morning diving prelims. She finished with a 357.90 score on Friday's one-meter dive. Ramos' score ranked 21st of the 24 divers to qualify for the National Championships. 

The WashU men moved into a tie for fifth place with Williams College as both teams possess 179 points while trailing Emory University (325). WashU's women remain in sixth place with 120 points while trailing the Eagles (471.50).
