Three NYU Swimmers Set School Records At NCAA Championships

Three NYU Swimmers Set School Records At NCAA Championships

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's swimming & diving team has completed day two at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, which are being held Wednesday-Saturday, March 15-18, at the Conroe ISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, TX.

The Violets currently sit in 7th place with 92.5 points, trailing Washington University in St. Louis in sixth place by 31.5 points. Emory University leads with 244 points.

"Another outstanding night.  The team is swimming out of their minds. Impressive performances all over the place and I couldn't be happier with their swimming," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "We have some huge races the next two days and I'm excited to how fast they will swim."

Ian Rainey set his second NYU record in as many days in his second-place finish in the 400-yard IM. His time of 3:50.65 bested his own school best time of 3:52.08, set earlier this year. Reid Hensen tied for third place in the same event, finishing in a time of 3:52.24.

"Ian and Reid really stepped up tonight and posted great times," continued Miele. "To place two guys in the top three in the nation is a great achievement."

Alexander Katz set a school-record of his own in the 200-yard freestyle, taking ninth in a time of 1:37.72 and earning Honorable Mention All-America status. Katz eclipsed Max Phillips' Violet mark of 1:39.04, set last year.

"Katz has only been training at NYU since January and he worked super hard to get back into racing shape, " said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "Based on his performance tonight, it looks like he has hit his stride and it's exciting to imagine how fast he will swim next season with a full year of training."

On the diving boards, Connor Brisson took third place in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 502.60.

"It was a well-fought event with two past national champions and Connor going at it. We back load his list so we knew the first few dives were important. Although they were ok it was a tough haul catching up," explained Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "Still, very proud of the way Connor came back to finish third, and we look forward to the three-meter on Saturday. It was great having the NYU crowd cheering the team."

Rainey, Hensen and Brisson all earned All-America status for their finishes.
