Emory University senior swimmer Andrew Wilson has been named the Division III Men's At-Large Academic All-American of the Year presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as announced by the organization via press release Tuesday afternoon.
Wilson, also the Academic All-American of the Year in 2015, becomes the first two-time Division III At-Large winner since CoSIDA split the College Division into Division II, Division III and College Division (NAIA, CIS, 2-year, Other) sections in 2010-11 and is only the fifth Emory student-athlete ever to be chosen as the National Academic All-American of the Year for his or her respective sport and the first repeat winner. He joins Andrea Pawliczek (2001, Women's Soccer), Tom Shane (2002, At-Large), Kyle Foster (2003, Baseball) and Megan Light (2014, Softball) in the elite group.
Wilson, a First Team selection as well in 2017, is joined on the CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large team by fellow senior swimmers Marissa Bergh (First Team), Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe (First Team) and Hayes Burdette-Sapp (Second Team). Sanchez-Aizcorbe was a Second Team selection while Burdette-Sapp was a Third Team honoree in 2016.
The four Academic All-America selections in addition to Men's Tennis Aman Manji's Second Team distinction brings the total of Academic All-Americans in Emory Athletics history to 182 including 70 First Team honors.
Wilson, a Physics and Applied Mathematics dual major with a 3.83 grade-point average, led the Eagles to their first-ever NCAA Division III team title in March. He was named the CSCAA Swimmer of the Year after winning national titles in five events: the 100 Breaststroke (50.94), 200 Breaststroke (1:50.80), 200 IM (1:44.18), 200 Medley Relay (1:26.14) and 400 Medley Relay (3:10.51) with all five times setting new Division III records.
He finished his illustrious career as a two-time CSCAA National Swimmer of the Year, a 10-time national champion, 17- time All-American, two-time UAA Swimmer of the Year, 15-time UAA Champion, 20-time All-UAA finisher, 14-time UAA Athlete of the Week and as a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American.
The Academic All-America teams and Academic All-American of the Year are selected from the pool of Academic All-District winners, which were announced by CoSIDA in May. Sports represented on the At-Large team include women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
By virtue of being named the Men's At-Large Team's Academic All-American of the Year, Wilson will be placed on the ballot for the Overall Academic All-American of the Year, which includes the Academic All-American of the Year selectees from the 12 Academic All-America Teams announced during the 2016-17 year. The Division III Overall Academic All-American of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, July 18th.
