NYU Moves Into Second Place After Second Day of MIT Invitational

The New York University men's swimming & diving team is in second place after the second day of competition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Winter Invitational, which is taking place Friday-Sunday, December 1-3, at MIT's Recreation Center in Cambridge, MA. 

The Violets have accumulated 732 points thus far, trailing only host MIT (933). 

The Violets dominated the 100-yard breaststroke event on Saturday, as they produced four of the top five finishers. Tim Kou won the event (55.50), Nianzhong Liu placed second (56.31), Prestin Li was fourth 56.66), and Keven Shang (56.84) took fifth. 

The Violets produced a one-two punch in the 200-yard butterfly, as Ian Rainey (1:47.63) edged out teammate Carlos Colmenares (1:47.64) by one one-hundreth of a second. Not far behind was Elan Oumarov (1:48.96) in fourth place. All three made the NCAA "B" cut, as did Sean Haechler (1:49.88), who finished sixth.

Rainey also won the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:53.79, while Tim Kwarcinski placed third (4:06.49). 

Chad Moody was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a winning time of 48.86.

William Looney was the Violets' top finisher in the 200-yard freestyle, taking third place in a time of 1:41.97. 

In the 50-yard freestyle, Joe Baron's fourth-place finish (20.70) led the Violet contingent.

In the relay events, NYU posted second- and fourth-place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle (with times of 1:22.90 and 1:23.85, respectively) and in the 400-yard medley relay (3:19.02, 3:21.23).

"I was very impressed with our team's performance tonight," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "They came out of the gate fired up and kept posting fast times all night. I'm looking forward to seeing us close out the meet strongly tomorrow."   

On the diving board, Connor Brisson, who captured the three-meter dive on Friday, was a winner again oin Saturday. This time, he was victorious in the one-meter event with a score of 338.35. 

"Connor continues to dominate at championship events," said Diving Coach Todd Kolean.
