The New York University men's swimming & diving team opened competition at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, which is being held in Indianapolis, IN, from Wednesday-Saturday, March 21-24.

The Violets, ranked #6 in the nation by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), obtained 55 points on day one and are tied for fifth place out of 37 teams. Denison University leads with 138.5 points.

"We had a great night," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "I am really proud of how we stood up and raced hard."

Ian Rainey won the 200-yard IM in a time of 1:46.94, becoming NYU swimming & diving's second national champion in as many years and the first men's swimming national champion in program history. His time broke his own school record of 1:48.74, set earlier this season.

"Ian had an amazing race. He attacked the race, held off the top breaststrokers in the county and finished it off with an impressive freestyle leg," explained Miele. "Just a great race that he really deserved to win."

On the diving boards, Connor Brisson captured second place in the men's three-meter competition with a score of 553.00.

"It was a great final event and Connor dove really well, but just got edged out," said Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "He's a little disappointed but I, as a coach, could not be more proud with his last three-meter meet for NYU."

Also competing for NYU at the NCAA's on Wednesday were:

500-yard freestyle: William Looney (30th, 4:35.59), Josh Rine (36th 4:45.14)
