Ian Rainey Sets UAA Record As NYU Stands In Second At UAA Championships

The New York University men's swimming & diving team is in second place at the University Athletic Association Championships, which are being held Wednesday-Saturday, February 14-17, at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

The Violets currently have 1,006 points, ahead of third-place Washington University in St. Louis (981.5) and trailing only the host Eagles (1,153). 

"The swimmers really stepped up tonight and swam extremely well, individually and relays," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "We had many NCAA-qualifying times and personal bests. We have been getting stronger as the meet has gone on."

Ian Rainey won the 400-yard IM in a NYU-and-UAA-record time of 3:49.68. He teamed up with Tim Kou, William Looney and Nianzhong Liu to place third in the 800-yard medley relay (6:43.85).

MORE HIGHLIGHTS

- NYU collected valuable points in a pair of events where the Violets placed three swimmers in the eight-competitor finals. Chad Moody (49.25), Adam Betts (50.16) and Josh Rine (52.78) took third, fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke while Sean Haechler (49.58), Elan Oumarov (49.76) and Shawn Lin (50.10) finished third, fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly.

- Liu took second place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.61), while Kou took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.08) just ahead of Giorgio DelGrosso (55.12) in third.

- The 200-yard medley relay squad of Betts, Moody, Kou, and Joe Baron took third in a time of 1:30.76.
