NYU Defeats Merchant Marine Academy

The New York University men's swimming & diving team was victorious over the United States Merchant Marine Academy at the Palladium Athletic Facility on Friday, January 12.

The Violets (4-0) defeated the Mariners (4-2) by a score of 137-100.

Double-winner Ian Rainey led NYU on Friday, taking the 400-yard IM (4:05.44) and 500-yard freestyle (4:46.24).

"I was very happy with the team's performance tonight," remarked Head Coach Trevor Miele. "They bounced back well from a tough week of training."

William Looney showed versatility, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:44.68) and finishing runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke (52.32) to teammate Adam Betts (52.00).

On the diving boards, Nick Lemieux won the one-meter competition (286.87) and placed second in the three-meter (263.87)

"It was a good way for Nick to come back from a semester abroad," said Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "He made the zone qualifying score for the first time on the one-meter."

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Elan Oumarov won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 50.90.

- Nianzhong Liu captured the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.86).

- The 200-yard medley relay team of Betts, Tim Kou, Chad Moody, and Joe Baron was victorious in a time of 1:34.22.
