Washington University Tops Illinois Wesleyan Invitational Competition

The Washington University in St. Louis men's swimming & diving program finished on top of the five team pool of competition in the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational Saturday evening.

The men finished with the largest lead totaling 179 points to defeat Augustana College (111), Illinois Wesleyan (77), Millikin University (33) and Principia (31). 

Senior diver Ryan Nathenson captured first in the one-meter dive (409.35) and three-meter dive (235.90).

The men were led by junior Max Cardwell's three first place efforts. He placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:48.27) and the 100 freestyle (49.14). He wrapped up his evening as the anchor on the winning team of the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.99) with junior Andrew Pek, sophomore Jerry Chen and sophomore Chase Van Patten.

Chen and Van Patten also earned first place individual finishes. Chen swam to a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.38) while Van Patten's season-best 53.53 time in the 100 butterfly placed him ahead of the competition. 

The Bears 200 medley relay squad also swam to first place honors with a time of 1:37.63, which was led by junior Kevin Van Cleave, freshman Matthew Yang, junior Brandon Lum and sophomore Peyton Wilson. The women's 200 freestyle relay (1:40.44) also captured first freshman Katie Cardwell, freshman Sabrina Baxamusa, sophomore Catherine Cowin and junior Maddie Robinson.
