Kevin Van Cleave Leads Washington University on Day One of Miami Invitational

Junior Kevin Van­ Cleave of the Washington University in St. Louis swimming & diving program highlighted day one of the Miami (Ohio) University Invitational with a first place finish by breaking the school record in the 200 individual medley Thursday evening.

The Bears men finished day one in third place with 280 points while Denison University leads the way with 369 points and Miami is second with 307. The WashU men are leading Emory University (184) and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (147). 

Van Cleave posted an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:48.21 to place first in the 200 IM, which also marked a personal best time. Also posting top-five times in the 200 IM for the men were junior Jordan Wheeler in fourth place (1:51.73) and sophomore Peyton Wilson in fifth place (1:52.42). Wheeler posted a personal-best time that also met the NCAA "B" cut requirement.

Wilson, Van Cleave, junior Andrew Pek and sophomore Chase Van Patten also combined efforts in the 400 medley relay to place third with a "B" cut time of 3:18.43. The men's 200 free relay dropped nearly 1.5 seconds from their prelim time to nearly earn a "B" cut time while placing third (1:23.48) behind the efforts of sophomore Simon Deshusses, Van Patten, sophomore Jerry Chen and Pek.

Freshman Seth Ritter continued to lead the men in freestyle distance as he posted a season-best and "B" cut time in the 500 free (4:31.90). Meanwhile in the freestyle sprint Van Patten nearly earned a "B" cut time with a personal-best 20.98 finish to place ninth in the 50 free.
