Tartans Set 800-Yard Freestyle Relay School Record at Kenyon Total Performance Invitational

The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team continued competition at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational on Friday setting another school record. The Tartans are second in the standings heading into the final day.

Freshman Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet with a time of 3:58.10 in the 400-yard IM. His time placed him third overall while senior Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) was 10th in 4:08.07.

Junior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) picked up a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.81 to lead the Tartans, as freshman Daniel Ng(Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.38.

Senior Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) led the Tartans in the 100-yard breaststroke with a fourth-place finish in 56.69 while freshman Colin Daniel (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) was seventh in the event in 57.14.

Sophomore Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason) also provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet with a time of 48.94 in the 100-yard backstroke. His time that placed him second was just off his school record time of 48.63 he set yesterday on the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay. Freshman Jonathan Hua (New Providence, N.J. / Delbarton) also swam in the top finals heat of the 100-yard backstroke finishing 10th in 52.05.

The 800-yard freestyle relay closed the night with a school record performance. Dauksher, sophomore Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny), Ng and Hawke finished third in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6:43.52.

Senior Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass. / CRLS) tallied 482.70 points on the 1-meter board to win the event with freshmen Judson Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) finishing fourth with 433.75 points and freshman James Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) placing sixth with 401.80 points in the finals. James Kyle recorded a season-best score of 446.10 in the preliminaries.
