Abhishek Alla of Carnegie Mellon Crowned USTA/ITA National Singles Champion

(FT. MYERS, Fla.) - Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) was crowned the USTA/ITA National Small College Division III Champion on Saturday, October 12.  The Championships were held in Ft. Myers, Fla.

Alla won his third straight-set match in three days.  The sophomore, who was unseeded, defeated the No. 3 seed sophomore Skylar Butts of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-4, 6-1, in the championship match. In the second set, Alla fell behind 1-0 before winning six straight games for the victory. The sophomore also won 11 of the final 13 games.

Alla becomes the second male Tartan to win the ITA National Singles Championship. In 2000, current Carnegie Mellon Computer Science Professor Kayvon Fatahalian won the event.
