KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- University of Chicago men's tennis player Deepak Sabada reached the singles final, but absorbed a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) loss at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships on Monday.

Sabada, a junior, won his first six matches of the tournament to reach the title match as the No. 3 seed. He faced off against Kenyon College's Sam Geier, who was the No. 21 seed. Geier came out on top in the first set and then clinched the victory in a second-set tiebreaker. Sabada also took runner-up with freshman partner Sven Kranz in the doubles draw on Sunday.

"I am very pleased with how our team performed this weekend," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We got to the finals in both singles and doubles action, and our guys won throughout the lineup. We are a young team and we're still figuring out how to win some of those close matches. But our guys are going into the offseason with a new attitude and belief in their abilities. The team will work hard and continually improve. We have a bright future ahead of us."
