Eric Halpern of Emory Captures USTA/ITA South Region Singles Crown

From Emory University Athletics

After a year's hiatus, the Emory men's tennis team claims the USTA/ITA South Regional singles champion as junior Eric Halpern battled his way to a pair of come-from-behind victories on Sunday.  Serving as host of the Regional Championships was the University of the South.

Halpern became the seventh Emory player in the past eight years to win the crown as he defeated sophomore teammate Rafe Mosetick, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, in the title match.  Earlier in the day, Halpern advanced to the finals by virtue of a 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, battle against classmate Ian Wagner in the semifinals.  Mosetick earned his spot in finals by disposing of defending champion and No. 1 seed Robert Kjellberg of North Carolina Wesleyan, 6-1, 6-3.

By virtue of his championship performance, Halpern captures All-America honors and will advance to the ITA National Small College Championship, Oct. 10-13, in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Eagles' attempt for a sweep fell short in doubles as the North Carolina Wesleyan duo of Johan Lunjdahl and Kjellberg defeated Halpern and Simon Lavoie-Perusse, 8-4, in the championship match.
