Washington University in St. Louis freshman Jeremy Bush and junior Ross Putterman advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 NCAA Division III Doubles Championship with a straight-set victory Thursday in Claremont, Calif.
Bush and Putterman, the No. 2 seed in the 16-team draw, ousted Andrew La Cava and Colton Malesovas of Whitman College 6-2, 6-4 to win its opening round match. The duo suffered an 8-6 loss to La Cava and Malesovas May 11 in the Bears' 5-2 win over Whitman in the NCAA Central Regional Championship match.
With the win, Bush and Putterman improved its overall record to 24-9. The duo takes on Michael Holt/Taylor Shamshiri of Washington & Lee University Friday at 3 p.m. (PT) in the quarterfinals. Putterman, who is making his third-straight appearance in the doubles championship, teamed with Adam Putterman a year ago and suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Holt and Shamshiri in the quarterfinal.
In singles, Putterman and freshman John Carswell lost their first-round match in the 2014 NCAA Division III Singles Championship. Carswell dropped a 6-3, 7-6 to No. 27-ranked Joe Dorn of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, while Putterman suffered a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, defeat to Matt Heinrich of Stevens College. Carswell finished his rookie campaign with a 44-15 overall record, including a 25-5 record in singles.
