Horace Choy of NYU Named ITA Northeast Coach of the Year

From NYU Athletics

New York University men's tennis Head Coach Horace Choy was honored as the Division III Northeast Region Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Wednesday, May 14.

"It was an honor just to be nominated for this award," said Choy. "It's really recognition for the team and all the hard work they put in this year."

In his seventh year as Head Coach of the men's tennis team, Choy lead the Violets (8-3) to their best record since 1998 and to their fourth-straight winning season.

Overall, Choy has a 54-50 record as Head Coach.

NYU finished the year ranked #25 in the ITA National Rankings and #11 in the ITA Northeast Region rankings. The Violets rose as high as #23 in the nation and #5 in the Northeast during the ca,paign. This was the first time during Choy's tenure that the Violets were nationally ranked and the first time as a program since 2006.

Choy's #1 singles player, senior co-captain Steven Wu, was selected to compete at the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship. Wu will be the first Violet under Choy's tutelage to represent NYU at Nationals and the first player from the UNiversity since 2002.

Including Wu, two of Choy's players were ranked in the top-20 in the Northeast. Wu finished the season ranked #24 in the nation and #2 in the Northeast in singles. Additionally, sophomore Aaron Meltzer finished the season ranked #20 in the region. As a doubles pair, Wu and Meltzer were ranked as high as ninth in the Northeast.

The Violets finished their season at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, placing sixth for the second year in a row -- an impressive feat considering that seven of the eight UAA teams were ranked in the top-30 at the time.

All three of Choy's seniors (Wu, Tim Wu and Bowen Xu) receieved NYU's Academic Achievement Award for participating in a sport for at least two years and graduating with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

Choy has been a mainstay at NYU since he started coaching the women's tennis team in 1993. In his 21 years as Head Coach of the Violets, his teams have compiled 13 winning seasons.
