No. 9 CWRU Breezes Past Kalamazoo in NCAA Tournament Second Round

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Much like the program's NCAA Championship Tournament debut last season, the Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team made fast work of its second round opponent on Saturday. After receiving a first-round bye, the No. 9 nationally ranked Spartans swept Kalamazoo College (Mich.) by a score of 5-0 to advance to the Round of 16 tomorrow afternoon.

The match was moved indoors to The Club Monroeville due to inclement weather.

The Spartans (16-7) will play in the Round of 16 for the second season in a row and square off with arch rival and regional host Carnegie Mellon University. The teams met back in early April with the Tartans claiming a 5-4 victory. CWRU had won the previous two meetings, coming during the University Athletic Association Championship third-place matches of 2012 and 2013.

Versus Kalamazoo (13-9), the Spartans swept doubles play in order of 2, 3, 1. Seniors John Healey (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and Derek Reinbold (Carmel, Ind./Park Tudor) scored the first point in second position with an 8-4 victory against Alan Faber and Branden Metzler.

In singles, wins came at No. 1 (6-2, 6-3) and No. 4 (7-6, 6-4) with straight-set victories courtesy of sophomore Christopher Krimbill (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) and Reinbold, respectively.

Krimbill moved to 24-5 this season and a perfect 3-0 in three NCAA Tournament singles matches for his career.

Healey has a combined 134 wins for his career. Kyle Gerber '13 holds the school record with 139.
