#25 NYU Men's Tennis Defeats Rochester at UAA Championship

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's tennis team beat University of Rochester by the score of 6-3 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday, April 25. The championship is being held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL, from Thursday, April 24, through Saturday, April 26.

The #7-seeded Violets avenged an early-season loss and beat the #6-seeded Yellowjackets in the consolation bracket semi-finals.

The Violets were down early after going 1-2 in doubles, but stormed back in singles to seal the victory.

At #3 doubles, David Zumwalt and Ting Yuen Lai won by the score of 9-8 (8-6) in one of the closest matches the Violets have played all season.

"That doubles match was a battle," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "To have two first-year guys pull out a match like that really lifted up our team."

In singles, Steven Wu and Aaron Meltzer got back to their winning ways, taking down their competition in straight sets. CJ Leong,Sidd Thangirala and Han Ren Lim also picked up straight-set victories.

"It was a hard-fought match," said Choy. "We were hoping to be seeded higher in the tournament than Rochester, but despite that not happening, I always thought we were the better team and we proved it with this victory."

The Violets move on to face the University of Chicago on Saturday, April 26, for fifth place at the Championship. This match-up is a repeat of last year's fifth-place match. Chicago won that meeting 6-3.
