From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
Junior Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood,
Mass./Westwood) and sophomore Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad,
India / IMG Pendleton School) of the Carnegie Mellon University
men's tennis team competed at the 2014 NCAA Division III
Men's Tennis Championships Thursday, May 22. This year's
championships are being held at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center
in Claremont, California hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Colleges. It marked the second trip to the championships for
Heaney-Secord and the first for Alla.
Both opened play with straight set victories to advance to the
Round of 16. Heaney-Secord defeated Patrick Lipscomb of the
University of Redlands 6-2, 6-4 while Alla won 6-3, 6-1 over
Branden Metzler of Kalamazoo College.
In the Round of 16, Heaney-Secord bowed out with a 6-3, 6-0
setback to Chris Krimbill of Case Western Reserve University.
Alla dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to second-seed Joey Fritz of Amherst
College.
Heaney-Secord's and Alla's first round victory assured them of
All-America recognition from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
(ITA). The ITA awards All-American recognition to student-athletes
on assorted criteria, including earning at least one win at the
NCAA Singles Championships.
