Maroons Squeeze Past Brandeis 5-4 in Consolation Round of UAA Championship

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago men's tennis team jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 5-4 victory over Brandeis University in the consolation round of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday.

The No. 17-ranked Maroons (10-9) now advance to take on New York University in the fifth-place match on Saturday. The No. 30-ranked Judges dropped to 10-9.

UChicago, the No. 5 seed at the UAAs, started fast against No. 8-seed Brandeis. The Maroons swept all three doubles contests and looked to be in control. However, the Judges came roaring back with a trio of three-set victories at No. 1, 2 and 4 singles after dropping the first set in each match. UChicago held sway with wins by junior Ankur Bhargava at No. 3 singles and senior Zsolt Szabo at No. 5 singles. Bhargava was also victorious at No. 3 doubles.
