Brandeis Opens Spring Season With 6-3 Win at Chapman

From Brandeis University Athletics

The Brandeis University men's tennis team opened a four-match swing through California today with a 6-3 victory over Chapman University. The 31st-ranked Judges won five of six singles matches to take the victory and improve to 2-0 overall in 2014-15. The Panthers fall to 0-2.

Brandeis fell behind, 2-1, after doubles action. The Judges' No. 1 squad of sophomore Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and junior Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) rolled to an 8-3 victory, but Chapman's Justin P. Thompson and Sam Mittledorf tied the match at No. 3 with an 8-6 win, while Brett Buford and Charlie Werman edged Brandeis sophomores Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and Jeff Cherkin (Melville, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East), 9-8, at No. 2.

In singles action, five of the six matches were decided in straight sets, though there were no runaways. Granoff handled senior Justin Thompson, 6-3, 6-4, at the top spot, while classmate Ryan Bunis (Groton, Mass. / Groton-Dunstable) defeated rookie Justin P. Thompson by the same score at No. 2. Arguello bested Buford at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 7-6, but Chapman gained their lone singles point at No. 4, where Werman topped Lubarsky, 6-2, 6-4.

The match was clinched for the Judges at fifth singles, where junior Eric Miller (San Diego, Calif. / Francis Parker), a Boston University transfer, earned his second win in a Brandeis uniform, 6-3, 6-4, over Hunter Morris. Senior Alec Siegel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) completed the win in three sets at No. 6, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in a third-set super-tiebreaker over Mittledorf.
