#29 Brandeis Tops NYU, 6-3, in Regular Season Finale

The Brandeis men's tennis team, ranked No. 29 in Division III, closed out their regular season today with a 6-3 victory over rival New York University on the Rieger Tennis Courts. The Judges improve to 8-9 headed into next weekend's University Athletic Association tournament. The Violets fall to 3-7.

Brandeis took a 2-1 lead after doubles action. Sophomore Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and junior Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) earned an 8-5 victory at No. 1, while sophomores Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and Jeffrey Cherkin (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) were 8-4 winners at No. 2. NYU got on the board at No. 3, where Matt DeMichiel and CJ Leong were 8-6 victors over Judge seniors Michael Secular (Bronx, N.Y./Plant, Fla.) and Alec Siegel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield).

Granoff earned the third point of the match for the Judges at No. 1 singles when his opponent retired. Granoff was ahead, 6-1, 3-0, at the time. Cherkin moved the Judges within one point of victory with a 6-1, 6-3, triumph at No. 6, while doubles partner Arguello notched the clinching win at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3. 

NYU got two late points with a 7-6, 7-5, win at No. 4 by Samuel Khoshbin, and a three-set win by DeMichiel at No. 5, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Lubarsky won the day's final match at No. 3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. 

Prior to the match, the Judges recognized their three seniors playing in their final home match - Secular, Siegel and Matthew Zuckerman (Valley Stream, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett). The Judges will close out the season next week in Florida for the UAA Championships.
