Washington University in St. Louis sophomore Jeremy Bush and senior Ross Putterman advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Division III Doubles Championship with a straight-set victory Thursday in Mason, Ohio.
Bush and Putterman, unseeded in the 16-team draw, upset No. 4 seed Frankie Fischer and Chris Wooten of the University of Texas-Tyler 7-5, 6-7 (9-7), 6-2 in the first-round match.
Bush and Putterman improved its overall record to 18-13, and takes on Palmer Campbell and Peter Heidrich of national runner-up Middlebury College Friday at 4 p.m. (ET) in the quarterfinals. Bush and Putterman advanced to the semifinals of the Doubles Championship a year ago.
In singles, Putterman and sophomore John Carswell lost their opening-round match in the 2015 NCAA Division III Singles Championship. Carswell dropped a 6-0, 6-4 to Michael Liu of Wesleyan University (Conn.), while Putterman suffered a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss to Elite 89 winner Matt Heinrich of Stevens Institute of Technology.
Carswell, a two-time NCAA qualifier in singles, ended the season with a 9-21 while playing No. 1 for the Bears. Putterman, also a two-time NCAA qualifier in singles, posted a 21-8 mark playing No. 2 singles.
