No. 9 Carnegie Mellon Blanks Christopher Newport

The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team, ranked 9th nationally finished its weekend trip to Lexington, Virginia with a 9-0 victory over Christopher Newport University on Sunday, March 29.  The match was played on the campus of Washington and Lee University, as the Tartans improved to 11-6 while the Captains return home with the identical mark.

Carnegie took a 3-0 lead following doubles play.  The Tartans No.1 doubles team of seniors Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) won 8-4 over Justin Cerny and David Reed after the Tartans No. 3 tandem of senior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and junior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) defeated Arttu Fiva and Max Katcher 8-2.  The sweep of double was complete after the sophomore tandem of sophomore Jack Kasbeer (Lake Forest, Ill./Deerfield) and Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won in the two spot 8-6 over Steven Boslet and Chiraag Shetty.
    
The Tartans carried their momentum over into singles play winning all six matches in straight sets.  Junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) won 6-4, 6-3 against Reed at first singles, as Heaney-Secord won in the two spot over Boslet 6-1, 6-3.  Heaney-Secord has now won his last seven single matches.

At No. 3 singles, Duncan won his fourth consecutive match, as he downed Cerny 6-1, 6-3.  Sophomore Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) picked up his 17th victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Fiva at No. 4.  Zheng won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 over Michael Dodd while freshman Edward Ang (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) defeated Katcher 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
