Four Carnegie Mellon Individuals and Three Doubles Advance to ITA Round of 16

 Four Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis singles players and three doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 at the USTA-ITA Southeast Regional on Saturday, September 27 at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. Play will continue on Sunday, September 28 at 8:00 a.m.

Winning twice for the Tartans on Saturday was senior Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park), junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) and sophomores Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) and Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), all of whom are seeded in the tournament.

Duncan started the day defeating Chris Hu of Washington and Lee University 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 before topping Johns Hopkins University's Emerson Walsh 6-1, 6-0. Alla opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Max Oberholtzer of Ursinus College and then led 4-0 in the first set against Mohammed Ammouni of Penn State Abington before Ammouni retired due to injury.

Wadwani picked up his round of 64 win over Steven Baker of Shenandoah University 6-1, 6-0 and then defeated Eric Hurwitz of Mary Washington 7-6 (7-4), 6-0. Zheng was a winner over John Larkin of Swarthmore College 6-2, 6-1 and Eric Spangler of Salisbury University 7-4, 7-6 (7-4).

In doubles play, Duncan paired with sophomore Jack Kasbeer (Lake Forest, Ill./Deerfield) and received a bye in the round of 64 and defeated Caleb Kramer and Oberholtzer 8-1 to advance to the round of 16. Also receiving a bye in the round of 64 was senior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and junior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) who won their first match in the round of 32, 8-1 over Ryan Holtschneider and Vishnu Rajes of Washington College.

The final doubles team to advance to the round of 16 was Wadwani with freshman Andrew Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./Saint Francis). The pair won twice, defeating Ryan Byrd and Connor Hoerr of Randolph-Macon College 8-4 and Ian Goodwille and Matt Muoio of Albright College 8-6.

Playing singles in the Blue 1 Draw was freshman Connor O'Kelly (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). The first year Tartan defeated Steven Kaplan of Dickinson College 6-4, 6-1 and Tyler Arsenault of Ursinus 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals to be played on Sunday.
