Doubles Sweep Leads Carnegie Mellon to 7-2 Victory Against No. 11 Johns Hopkins

A doubles sweep led the 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team to a 7-2 victory against visiting Johns Hopkins University. The win moves the Tartans' record to 14-7 on the year while the No. 11 Blue Jays fall to 10-6.

All three doubles matches were tight as the No. 3 pair of sophomore Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) and freshman Edward Ang (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) won first, 8-6. The No. 1 pair of seniors Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) and Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) then won after a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-3), a few minutes before the No. 2 pair of senior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and junior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) finished the sweep with a 9-7 win.

Junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) was the first to finish in singles, as he won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Securing the match victory was Duncan at third singles, winning 6-4, 6-4.

The Tartans then went up 6-0 when Heaney-Secord won 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) at second singles.

Johns Hopkins won points at fifth singles and sixth singles, both in three sets, before sophomore Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) won his fourth singles match in a third set super tiebreaker, 6-7 (9-11), 6-2, 1-0 (10-2).
