The Emory University men’s tennis team continued its
strong play on the second day of the ITA South Regional
Championships on Saturday, with four players advancing to the
semifinals of singles and one doubles team into the championship
round.
Senior Alex Ruderman, the No. 1 seed, defeated teammates Lucas
Lund, 6-0, 6-2, and Scott Rubenstein, 6-1, 6-4, to move into
Sunday’s semis where he will tangle with junior Rafe
Mosetick, the No. 4 seed. Mosetick opened with a three-set
victory over fellow Eagle Roberto Bazzarella, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, before
upending No. 6 seed Sebastian Sikh of North Carolina Wesleyan in
straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Ian Wagner topped a pair of
Sewanee opponents, starting with a 7-6, 7-6, victory over No. 3
seed Avery Schober followed by a decisive 6-1, 6-4, verdict against
Connor Winkler. Wagner’s semifinal opposition will be
defending ITA Region singles champ senior Eric Halpern.
Halpern clawed his way to a 7-6, 7-6 outcome vs. Emory sophomore
Aman Manji before beating Eagle sophomore Josh Goodman in straight
sets, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, the No. 1-seeded duo of Ruderman and Wagner will
meet the North Carolina Wesleyan tandem of Robert Kjellberg and
Sikh for the title. Ruderman and Wagner rolled to an 8-1
triumph over teammates Andrew Lo and Rocco English in the quarters
before subduing Sewanee’s pair of Avery Schober and Eric
Roddy, 8-3 in the semis. Kjellberg and Sikh earned their way
into the title contest by virtue of an 8-4 outcome over Halpern and
freshman Scott Rubenstein in the semifinals.
Emory will have both competitors in the B Singles finals with
freshman March Zheng squaring off against classmate David Omsky for
