13 UAA Players Headed to 2014 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships

Thirteen UAA men's and women's student-athletes have reached the 2014 USTA/ITA National Small College Championship Quarterfinals, which begin on Thursday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

Senior Alex Ruderman of Emory University is the only player participating in both singles and doubles, entering the singles tournament as the top seed and teaming with senior Ian Wagner as the second seed in the doubles tournament. All opening matches are on Thursday.

Ruderman will face freshman Nicolas Chua of the University of Chicago in a singles quarterfinal match at 10:30 a.m. He and Wagner face Chad Mayer and Aaron Skinner of Trinity University in a doubles quarterfinal at 3 p.m.

Also playing in the men's doubles quarterfinal is the Chicago duo of freshman David Liu and senior Deepak Sabada, who square off against the Bates College team of Christopher Ellis and Pierre Planche.

The women's singles draw also features two UAA players facing off in a quarterfinal match as fourth-seeded junior Beatrice Rosen plays sophomore Rebecca Ho of Washington University at 8:30 a.m.

Three UAA teams advanced to the women's doubles tournament with senior Megan Tang and first-year competitor Ariana Iranpour of Chicago seeded third. Sophomore Katarina Su and first-year player Anna Fuhr of Emory are seeded fourth.

Tang and Iranpour play Liza Southwick and Marie Lutz of Trinity University in the quarterfinals, while Su and Fuhr are scheduled to face Emma Chow and Tess Trinka of Bowdoin College. The NYU duo of Laila El Dessouki and Carmen Lai play the Washington & Lee tandem of Patricia Kirkland and Sonja Meighan in their quarterfinal match. All the women's doubles begin at 1 p.m.
