Chicago Wraps Up Weekend With 8-1 Victory Against Wisconsin-Whitewater

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago men's tennis team closed out its weekend action in St. Louis with an 8-1 victory over University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday.

The No. 13-ranked Maroons (13-4) picked up their first win against Wisconsin-Whitewater in four years. The No. 25-ranked Warhawks fell to 16-7 on the season.

Sunday's matchup was UChicago's tenth match against a nationally-ranked opponent this season. The Maroons picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to go up 2-1 heading into singles. From there, UChicago dominated one-on-one and swept all six matches. Two matches went to three sets, but freshmen David Liu and Michael Selin both pulled out the wins with sharp third sets at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Freshmen Nicolas Chua and Liu were winners as a doubles tandem and individually as singles players on the day.

"The guys came ready today and it showed," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We didn't allow ourselves to make any excuses and really played to win. Our seniors – Ankur Bhargava and Deepak Sabada – have done an outstanding job leadings us all year and this weekend was no different. They're now 4-0 as a doubles team against four of the top-ranked teams in the country. The wins are great but it's their energy and attitude that carry over into the rest of the team, creating a great competitive environment for us to compete in."
