Senior Julian Danko was a perfect 4-0 in matches to open
the season for the University of Rochester men's tennis team on
Saturday in the day 1 action of the UR Fall
Invitational.
Danko reached the semifinals of A singles and the doubles
bracket teamed with junior Ben Shapiro. In singles, the
senior won by 8-6 scores over RPI's Sundar Devakottai and teammate
Sam Leeman to reach the semifinals where he will face Tristan Wise
of Rensselaer.
Also making the semifinals in A singles, was junior Ian
Baranowski who won by 9-8 (5) over McKinley Grimes of RPI and 8-3
over Miles Single of Hobart for the right to face off with Hobart's
Michael Rusk.
Sophomore Jonny Baker, Shapiro and Leeman all won their first
round matches before losing in the quarterfinals.
Rochester struggled in B singles with freshman Andrew Nunno
the only one of the six Yellowjackets to win his opening
match. He won 8-4 over Luke DeLuccia of Hobart before losing
in the quarters to Sherman Uyeno of RPI. Rensselaer has all
four semi-finalists in the B singles bracket.
In doubles play, Danko and Shaprio made quick work of their
first two opponents, winning 8-3 and 8-4 for the right to play in
Sunday's semifinals. The team of Baker and Leeman won its
first match as well, but dropped a tight one in the second round
7-9 to a Hobart duo.
