Julian Danko of Rochester Captures A Flight, Starts Season 4-0

Senior Julian Danko topped junior teammate Ian Baranowski to capture the A flight singles title at the UR Men's Tennis Fall Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Lyman Tennis Center.
 
Danko was a 6-2, 7-6 (7) winner over Baranowski in the all Rochester final.  It was an all RPI final in the B singles bracket with Stephen Baxter defeating Anthony Kim 6-2, 6-1.  In the doubles bracket, Rensselaer's McKinley Grimes and Brandon Mazzara topped Hobart's Michael Fields and Matt DePrima by an 8-6 score to take the title.  The opening weekend tournament featured three teams, Rochester, Rensselaer and Hobart.
 
With the win, Danko moves to 4-0 on the season in singles and is 7-1 overall combined with doubles.  He and junior Ben Shapiro ended 3rd in the doubles bracket after losing a tight match in the semifinals before winning in the consolation match by an 8-3 score.
 
Overall in the A flight singles bracket, Rochester took home five of the top seven places with Danko and Baranowski going 1-2 and sophomore Jonny Baker topping Shapiro for 5th place.  Sophomore Sam Leeman ended 7th as well.  Baker and Leeman ended sixth in the doubles bracket.
 
Also on Saturday, UR had some success in the B singles consolation bracket.  Sophomore Ryan Zu won two matches while Matt Golub and Ben Mermelstein each were victorious one time.
