Tyler Kratky Reaches USTA/ITA Central Region Singles Final

Junior Tyler Kratky continued his run through the 2014 USTA/ITA Central Region Singles Championship with two wins Sunday to advance to the championship match set for Monday in Indianapolis. 

Kratky, the No. 17 seed in the 128-man singles draw, won six matches in three days and ousted four seeds en route to the championship match. Kratky took down WUSTL sophomore and No. 11 seed Jeremy Bush in the quarterfinal 0-6, 6-3, 6-3, and then defeated David Liu of the University of Chicago 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Kratky will take on No. 19 seed Nicolas Chua of Chicago in the championship match Monday. Chua defeated No. 8 seed and Washington U. freshman Johnny Wu 6-2, 6-2 in the other second semifinal. Wu got into the quarterfinals without being tested, and then took out No. 10 seed Anton Bartashevich of Earlham College 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the semis.

Washington U. had six student-athletes advance to the round of 32 – Bush, freshman Jason Haugen, Kratky, senior Kevin Chu, senior Ross Putterman and Wu. Bush rolled into third round with straight-set wins, and rallied for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 win over Luke Tsai of Chicago in the round of 16. His run came to an end in the quarterfinals with the three-set loss to Kratky.

Chu had an impressive run in the main draw and was taken out in the round of 16 by Chua. Chu's play was highlighted by a 3-6 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 1 seed Christopher Krimbill of Case Western Reserve University 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 32. Haugen, who was unseeded, posted a pair of straight-set wins before falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 loss to Bartashevich in the round of 32.

Putterman, the No. 6 seed, coasted past his first three opponents losing a total of three games. He took out No. 14 seed Ankur Bhargava of Chicago in the round of 16 before falling in three sets to Chua 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-1), 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Sophomores Collier Bouchillon and Kai Skallerud, who won the Kalamazoo Doubles Championship a year ago, advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles before losing to eventual champions Derek Liu and Deepak Sabada of Chicago, 8-3. Chu and Haugen also made a run to the quarterfinals before falling to Krimbill and Louie Stuerke of Case 8-5.

Freshman Jake Klein cruised to the B Singles Championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Andrew Naranjo of Kenyon College. Klein, the top seed in the 32-man singles draw, did not drop a set en route to the title.
