Case Western Reserve University seniors CJ Krimbill and Louis Stuerke advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Doubles Championships after opening play in the tournament with a win on Thursday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Krimbill and Stuerke, the top-seeded duo in the draw, earned a straight-set victory over the University of Texas – Tyler's Arthur Fagundes and Frankie Fischer, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to Friday's quarterfinal match. The win was the 32nd doubles win of the season for both Krimbill and Stuerke, setting a new single-season program record. Krimbill had previous held the school record, with 31 doubles wins in both 2012-13 and 2013-14.
The Spartans' duo will take on Bowdoin College's Luke Tercek and Luke Trinka, who picked up a three-set win over Johns Hopkins University's Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin in the round of 16 on Thursday. Krimbill was also in action in the singles draw on Thursday. Entering the tournament as the eighth-seeded player, he topped CJ Antonio of Oglethorpe University, 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 32. However, he fell short in three sets in his next match, dropping a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 decision to Ben Rosen of Bates College in the round of 16.
Krimbill, who earned All-America honors as a singles player for the fourth-straight year, will end his career as the program's all-time leader in singles wins with a 107-31 record. His 30-6 singles record this season set the program-record for singles victories in a season as well. In addition, he is just the second player in University Athletic Association history with over 200 combined singles and doubles wins, and after a 2-1 day on Thursday, has a 229-60 career ledger.
