Tartans to Face Each Other in USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Semifinals

The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team will have players competing for a USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Singles and Doubles Championship on Monday but they'll have to go through their teammates first as two teams will play each other in the semifinals of doubles and two players will face off in the semifinals of singles thanks to their respective finishes on Sunday.

In doubles play, sophomore Jeffrey Chen (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and junior Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) upset the number two seed of Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin of the University of Mary Washington, 8-5, in the round of 16. The pair then passed on to the semifinals as the number five seed of Jeremy Dubin and Scott Thygesen of Johns Hopkins University had to withdrawal due to injury.

Chen and Zheng will match up against teammates, senior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) and freshman Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School). Kumar and Levine, seeded third, defeated Colin Muraika and Rodrigo Saad of Johns Hopkings, 8-4, in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, the senior and freshman defeated Steven Boslet and Chiraag Shetty, seeded fifth, of Christopher Newport University, 8-5.

Levine will also play in the singles semifinals as he advanced through the bracket with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Michael Holt of Washington and Lee University and topped Dubin of Johns Hopkins, 5-7, 7-6(7-2), 1-0, when Dubin had to retire due to injury.

The freshman will have to face senior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School), who has twice played for the regional crown, winning it and the national title as a sophomore in 2013. Alla is a two seed and defeate Mark Fallati of Swarthmore College 6-4, 6-7(5-7), 7-5 in the round of 16. He then topped Gilmore of Mary Washington, 7-6(7-1), 7-5, in the quarterfinals.
