From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked sixth in Division III, began its spring break swing of matches with two 9-0 wins over Grossmont College in California on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 8-1 on the season and the win was the sixth-straight for the Spartans to start the spring season.
Match 1 - CWRU 9, Grossmont 0
In doubles action, seniors CJ Krimbill and Louis Stuerke defeated Sean Lee and Maae Al Jumaili 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while juniors James Fojtasek and Phil Gruber claimed an 8-1 victory over Gabe De Costa and David Colera in the third doubles match. Junior Freddy Daum and freshman John Benedetto rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win in the third doubles match over Huge Pires and Pedro Baniuk.
In singles action, Krimbill outplayed Sean Lee at first singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Gruber claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Colera at No. 6 singles. Also claiming singles wins for the Spartans on Saturday were freshman Robert Stroup at second singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Pires, Stuerke at third singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Al Jumaili, junior Joshua Dughi at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-1 over De Costa, and junior Adam Collins at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Baniuk.
Match 2 - CWRU 9, Grossmont 0
Senior CJ Krimbill and freshman John Benedetto paired up for the first time this season to outscore Sean Lee and Maae Al Jumaili 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Senior Louis Stuerke and freshman David Zakhodin played No. 2 doubles and defeated their opponents Huge Pires and Pedro Baniuk 8-2. Juniors Freddy Daum and Gabriel Murcia also claimed an 8-1 victory over Gabe De Costa and David Colera in the third doubles match.
In singles play, Zakhodin outplayed De Costa at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0, and freshman Tyler Holsopple claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Baniuk at No. 5 singles. Also with singles wins for the Spartans were junior Kevin Dong at second singles, 6-1, 6-1 over Pires, Benedetto at third singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Al Jumaili and Murcia at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-4 over Colera. Fojtasek earned a victory at No. 1 singles for the Spartans winning the first set 2-0.
