Sixth-Ranked Spartans Top NYU 8-1

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team swept all three doubles matches, and claimed wins in five of the six singles contests on Saturday night, as the sixth-ranked Spartans defeated New York University 8-1 at the Cleveland Racquet Club in Pepper Pike, Ohio.

The win raised the Spartans' overall record to 12-5 for the season, including a 9-2 record against NCAA Division III competition.  NYU dropped to 2-5 for the year with the loss.

The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match with victories at each of the three doubles matches.  In the first match, seniors CJ Krimbill and Louis Stuerke improved to 17-5 on the season with an 8-0 win over NYU's Sammy Aronson and Benedict Teoh.  Junior James Fojtasek and Phil Gruber won their 11th-straight match and improved to 14-1 overall this year with an 8-2 win at second doubles over Sidd Thangirala and Shrikar Kundur, and freshmen John Benedetto and David Zakhodin rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Matt DeMichiel and Yanik Parsch at third doubles.

In singles play, Krimbill bested Thangirala 6-2, 6-1 in the first match, while Fojtasek added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Teoh at second singles.  The Spartans picked up straight-set victories in the fifth and sixth singles matches, with junior Kevin Dong besting Parsch 6-2, 6-4, and junior Joshua Dughi defeating Aronson 6-0, 7-5, respectively.  At fourth singles, Stuerke added a three-set win, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8, over Jiri Honajzer.

NYU would salvage a point at third singles, where DeMichiel picked up a three-set win, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4, over freshman Robert Stroup.
