From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked sixth in Division III, overpowered the College of Wooster with a 9-0 win at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's win, which came in the first home outdoor match of the year for the Spartans, raised the team's record to 16-6 on the season. Wooster dropped to 9-13 with the loss.
The Spartans got off to a strong start to the match with wins in each of the three doubles contests. The third doubles team of freshman John Benedetto and David Zakhodin got on the board first with an 8-1 win over Jesse DeWitt and Kieran McTague, while seniors CJ Krimbill and Louis Stuerke followed with an 8-1 win over Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins at first doubles. Juniors James Fojtasekand Phil Gruber secured the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Titas Bera and Harrison Suttle in the second doubles match.
Stuerke would tally the first singles win of the match, topping Suttle 6-1, 6-0 in the fourth match, and Fojtasek would clinch the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the second singles match. Adding singles wins for the Spartans on Saturday were Krimbill in the first match, 6-2, 6-2 over Bera in the first match, freshman Robert Stroup in the third match, 6-3, 6-1 over Elkins, junior Kevin Dong in the fifth match, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 over DeWitt, and junior Freddy Daum in the sixth match, 6-3, 6-3 over Michael Beatty.
Krimbill's singles win was the 99th of his career, as the senior will have a chance to become the first Case Western Reserve player ever with 100 career singles victories, when the team is back in action tomorrow.
The sweep was the eighth of the season for the Spartans.
