Aman Manji of Emory Awarded Sonny Carter Scholarship

From Emory University Athletics

Emory University junior men's tennis player Aman Manji has been awarded the Sonny Carter Scholarship, based on his academic, athletic and community achievements during his three years as an Eagle.

The Sonny Carter Scholarship is presented annually to an Emory College of Arts and Sciences junior who demonstrates a commitment to developing his or her full human potential, and who clearly strives to use his or her intellectual, physical, and moral qualities for the common good.

Applicants are evaluated based on academic performance, involvement and leadership in the community, moral qualities supporting the common good and making physical activity a part of his or her everyday life.

Manji has been a fixture in the Eagles' singles lineup over the past two campaigns, this year at the No. 3 spot where he has helped the squad to a No. 1 national ranking in the NCAA Division III ranks and an overall record of 20-3.  A co-captain on this year's team, Manji is currently on a seven-match win streak that has boosted his season record to 19-5 (16-3 in the spring).  Most recently, he recorded three victories at this past weekend's University Athletic Association Championships, where he helped the team defend its conference title.   Last year, he landed First Team All-UAA acclaim at six singles.

A native of Sammamish, Washington, Manji majors in biology and has amassed a 3.43 cumulative grade point average.  He has been named to the Academic All-UAA team in each of the last two seasons while also earning ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.

While at Emory, Manji has participated in Volunteer Emory, helping at the Ronald McDonald House and Forever Family, as well as serving on the Volunteer Committee while as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.  He is a member of the Pre-Dental Society.

The scholarship is named after Emory alumnus Manley Lanier "Sonny" Carter Jr. ('69C, '73M), a soccer player, physician, test pilot and astronaut.  The merit based scholarship was established by Mrs. Dana Carter ('70C) and Dr. David Short ('70C), along with other friends and family of Sonny Carter.

The scholarship will provide Manji with partial tuition for one academic year.
