For the second year in-a-row, University of Chicago men's tennis player Nicolas Chua won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region singles championship on Tuesday.
The ITA Regional was hosted over the weekend at Washington University-St. Louis. UChicago freshman Max Liu advanced to the singles final with two wins on Sunday. On the other side of the bracket, the semifinal featured sophomore teammates Nicolas Chua and Luke Tsai. However, with class officially starting this week on the Hyde Park campus, the semifinal and final were moved to UChicago's courts.
The Monday semifinal was won by Chua over Tsai by scores of 7-5, 6-2. In Tuesday's final, Chua took on Liu and came away with the 6-0, 6-0 victory. Chua will next face the other ITA regional winners in the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in October.
"I'm extremely proud of the entire team's effort last weekend and having the two singles finalists is just icing on the cake," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "I think Nick's experience in big matches helped him in today's match, but Max has a ton of positives to take away from his tournament. Hopefully the guys on the team can see our potential and work hard towards our goals this season."
