Maroons Advance Five Players at Day Two of ITA Regional

The University of Chicago men's tennis team continued its stellar run of play by advancing five players into the singles quarterfinals at day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships on Saturday.

A day after going 19-1 in singles play, nine Maroons remained alive in the singles bracket. Five different UChicago athletes went 2-0 and will play in Sunday's quarterfinals, making up more than half of the remaining singles participants.

The Maroons went 12-4 overall in singles. Sophomore Nicolas Chua, the No. 2 seed, rebounded from a rough second set to win his first match 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. The next match went quicker at 7-6, 6-0. Sophomore Luke Tsai pulled the big upset of the day in the round of 16. The No. 16-seed Tsai knocked off the No. 3 seed from Kenyon College by scores of 6-3, 6-4. Tsai will meet sophomore teammate Peter Leung in Sunday's quarterfinal after Leung won his two matches by scores of 7-5, 7-6 and 6-1, 6-2.

Sophomore David Liu came in as the No. 18 seed and deposed the No. 4 seed from Washington University-St. Louis in his opener 6-4, 6-3. He then triumphed in three sets to reach the quarters (6-7, 7-5, 6-3). Freshman Max Liu also won a three-setter before blasting his round of 16 opponent 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Michael Selin and freshman Charlie Pei both went 1-1 on the day.

In doubles, the Maroons went 6-2. The No. 11-seed tandem of Chua and David Liu won their two matches 8-3 and 8-4 to advance to the semifinals. The 8-4 quarterfinal victory came at the expense of freshmen comrades Max Liu and Pei. Tsai and junior Max Hawkins won 8-3 before losing 8-6 in the quarters to the No. 2 seeds from Kenyon. Leung and Selin advanced to the consolation bracket semifinals with wins of 8-4 and 8-6.
