Maroons Sweep Singles En Route to 7-2 Win Over UC Santa Cruz

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago men's tennis team dominated singles play and came away with a 7-2 victory over University of California-Santa Cruz on Tuesday.

The No. 4-ranked Maroons (11-1 overall) won their fourth-straight match. The No. 30-ranked Banana Slugs fell to 3-6.

UC Santa Cruz held sway in doubles with narrow 8-6 and 9-7 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. UChicago got on the board at No. 1 doubles with the sophomore duo of Nicolas Chua and David Liu winning handily, 8-3.

The Maroons shook off the early losses and ran through singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. It marks the fifth time this year that UChicago has swept singles in a dual match. Chua, freshman Charlie Pei, Liu, sophomore Peter Leung, freshman Max Liu and sophomore Luke Tsai all earned victories.

"After a slow start in doubles, the guys did a great job of turning up the energy and controlling the match," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We will need to turn it up a notch over the next few days if we want to finish the trip the way we want to."
