The University of Chicago men's tennis team began its spring break trip in California with a 5-4 win against Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday.

The No. 4-ranked Maroons improved to 10-1 and the No. 25-ranked Ducks dropped to 5-3.

UChicago staked itself to a 2-1 lead after doubles, with handy wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Singles play was split evenly 3-3, with Stevens pulling out a pair of three-set wins. But the Maroons earned the clinching team point at 5-2 before the Ducks took the last two matches.

Freshman Charlie Pei was victorious at both No. 2 singles and at No. 2 doubles with sophomore partner Peter Leung. The combination of sophomores Luke Tsai and Bobby Bethke got the win at No. 3 doubles. The other singles wins came courtesy of sophomore David Liu at No. 4 and freshman Max Liu at No. 6.

"It wasn't our prettiest performance of the year, but we found a way to get five points," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "We knew the adjustments to outdoor tennis would be tough, but I think we let it affect us a little too much. Luckily, we get to play again tomorrow so we can make some fixes and feel a little better about where we are at."
