The University of Chicago men's tennis team shook off several early deficits in singles and turned in a complete performance to beat Tufts University 8-1 on Wednesday.
The No. 4-ranked Maroons (12-1) beat their 10th nationally-ranked opponent of the season. The No. 22-ranked Jumbos (4-1) absorbed their first loss.
UChicago took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. But early on in singles, Tufts were up a break in three different matches at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5. The Maroons slowly battled back though and locked down in the second sets – UChicago won all six second sets with the closest score of 6-3. The No. 2 and No. 3 spots went to a deciding third set, and freshman Charlie Pei and sophomore David Liu continued their momentum to claim the wins. The Maroons claimed all six singles spots to account for the final 8-1 margin.
The multiple winners on the day included sophomore Nicolas Chua, Liu, Pei and sophomore Peter Leung. Freshman Max Liu and sophomore Luke Tsai also won their singles matches in straight sets.
"Today's win was our most complete match of the year by far," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We came out focused and ready to play. We controlled the court, attacked on big points, and found a way to win the close games and matches. We are feeling confident heading into our match with last year's NCAA champion on Friday."
