The University of Chicago men's tennis team got off to a fast start at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with a 9-0 quarterfinal victory over University of Rochester on Thursday.
The No. 5-ranked Maroons improved to 15-3 and ended the Yellowjackets' (9-8) six-match winning streak. UChicago entered the conference tournament weekend as the No. 2 seed while Rochester came in as the No. 7 seed in the eight-team field.
Sophomore Peter Leung and freshman Charlie Pei blasted through at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-0 to start the day on a positive note. Sophomores Nicolas Chua and David Liu followed with an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles. After falling behind 4-1 at No. 3 doubles, sophomore Luke Tsai and junior Max Hawkins recovered and ended strong to triumph 8-6.
A one-hour rain delay right after doubles wrapped up kept the players sidelined. But once singles recommenced, UChicago ended up being the first team off the courts. The Maroons won all six singles bouts in straight sets. The wins came courtesy of David Liu, Pei, junior Sven Kranz, Leung, Tsai and freshman Max Liu, in lineup order.
David Liu's match ended last and his victory was of particular distinction. The sophomore has now won at all six singles spots – one through six – over the course of this season.
